Your life in weeks

Each square is one week. The shaded ones are behind you. It is not a countdown and not a scare — it is a way of seeing a long span at once, which years and dates never manage.

Why weeks

A year is too coarse to feel — “I have about fifty left” means nothing on a Tuesday. A day is too fine to hold; nobody plans in four-figure day counts. A week is the unit most lives are actually run in: a working week, a weekend, a gym schedule, a Sunday review.

The idea of drawing a life this way comes from Tim Urban's Your Life in Weeks, published on Wait But Why in 2014. This is our version of it, drawn from your own date of birth.

What to do with it

The grid is only useful if something changes on the Monday after you look at it.

  • Count the weeks, not the years, for one thing you keep postponing. A trip “in a couple of years” is about a hundred weeks — and if it is season-locked, far fewer chances than that.
  • Look at the shaded rows. Whatever occupied the last five years will occupy the next five unless something moves.
  • Put a date on one item. Our bucket list ideas piece is built around exactly that: a month, a budget line and a first step.

How the drawing works

Each row is one year of your life, 52 squares wide. A year is 52.18 weeks, so the grid drifts by roughly a week a decade — the alternative is ragged rows, which destroys the one thing the picture is for.

Everything is worked out in your browser. Your date of birth is not sent to us, not stored, and not logged.

Questions people ask

What life expectancy should I put in?

Whatever you want to plan against. It is a horizon, not a prediction — and the picture works the same whether you set 70 or 95. Life expectancy in India is around 70, and higher for people who have already reached adulthood.

Is this meant to be depressing?

It isn't for most people. The common reaction is the opposite: the weeks ahead are a large number, and seeing them laid out makes postponing a specific thing harder to justify.

Is my date of birth stored?

No. The grid is drawn in your browser, and nothing you type is sent to us, saved or logged.

Why 52 columns when a year is 52.18 weeks?

So every row lines up. The cost is a drift of about one week per decade, which is visible only if you count squares against a calendar.
