Blinkist Alternatives, Including the Free Ones

Four Minute Books, Shortform, your library — and why summaries evaporate in a week. How Becom's Learning Hub turns one into a habit you actually start.

The Becom team

Blinkist made short book summaries a category. People go looking for an alternative for two reasons: the subscription renews and the reading does not, or fifteen minutes of audio leaves nothing behind a week later.

The second reason is the one worth solving. There are plenty of places to read a summary, several of them free, and we have listed them below. But the reason a summary evaporates has nothing to do with which site wrote it.

The problem is not the summary

A summary you read and forget cost you fifteen minutes and taught you nothing. The books that change how you act are the ones where you did something within the week — wrote down the one idea, changed a habit, had a conversation differently.

Three things make one stick:

  1. Write one line in your own words. Not a highlight — a sentence you would say out loud.
  2. Pick exactly one action. "Read more" is not one; "ten pages before bed on weekdays" is.
  3. Come back to it after a month. If nothing changed, the idea did not land, and re-reading it will not help.

Almost every summary service stops at step one. Reading happens in one app and acting happens in another, which is to say it usually does not happen.

What we built instead

Our Learning Hub has short summaries of Ikigai, The Psychology of Money, Mindset, Start With Why, The One Thing, Eat That Frog, The Four Agreements and How to Win Friends and Influence People, alongside plain explainers of ideas like the 80/20 rule, the compound effect and neuroplasticity.

The difference is what sits under each one. Every summary ends with key takeaways and a suggested action, and that action opens in the same app as your habits and goals. Read the summary of a book about habits and create the habit on the next screen — the step where reading quietly stops for most people.

It is included with Becom, which is a paid app with a 30-day trial and no card taken up front, and the library is in the dozens rather than the thousands. We write them one at a time.

Free places to read summaries

Four Minute Books is a website with well over a thousand summaries, free to read, no account needed. Plain writing and specific takeaways. Start here if you want the idea of a book and nothing around it.

Your public library. Many Indian city and university libraries lend ebooks and audiobooks through apps like Libby. If you want the actual book rather than a summary, this is the cheapest path to it.

Author talks and long interviews. Most non-fiction authors have given an hour-long talk covering the whole argument, free on YouTube or a podcast. For many books that talk is the book, minus the case studies.

The author's own summary. Plenty of books have a free chapter summary or newsletter series from the author. Check their site before paying anyone to compress it.

Paid, when you want more depth

Shortform writes far longer summaries than Blinkist — chapter by chapter, with commentary and counter-arguments. If your complaint is that summaries are too thin, this is the direct answer, at a higher price.

getAbstract leans business and professional, with a large corporate library. Often available free through an employer, which is worth checking before subscribing personally.

Blinkist's own free tier gives you a rotating free title each day. If you read the odd summary, that may be all you need.

Choosing between them

If you want volume and nothing else, Four Minute Books is free and enormous. If you want a chapter-by-chapter treatment, Shortform goes deeper than anyone. If the problem is that none of it changes what you actually do on a Tuesday, that is the gap Becom's Learning Hub was built for — and you can read it free for 30 days before deciding.
